Drying Out a Wet Crawl Space

13th April, 2018

You probably don’t think about steps to ensure your crawl space stays dry until it’s flooded with water. We know, we’ve seen it many times and it’s an unfortunate situation. April showers are in full effect, so it’s now more important than ever to take the necessary steps to fix your crawl space. Here’s what you can do to dry out your wet crawl space.

Stop Water from Entering

First and foremost, it’s important to stop the water source from entering your crawl space. Check the foundation for cracks to see if water is entering. If it is, this may be a sign of a structural problem.

Dry & Clean

Certainly, we recommend contacting us to help understand why your crawlspace is damp or wet, as there are many reasons for water besides just heavy rains.  Any exposed dirt, gravel or concrete floor in a crawlspace can become wet with puddles in low spots or are inherently moist year-round.  Ignoring these issues are likely going to result in mold, and sometimes even structural damage.  All debris in a crawlspace laying on the ground may be the first-place mold begins, and once started mold spores can quickly cover the sub-floor, sill plates, main beam and rims joists.  Please do not consider a moist crawlspace normal, as this will become a health hazard and create a sick home.

Keep Moisture Out!

Crawl space encapsulation can help ensure that your crawl space will stay dry year-round. Using existing supplies from your HVAC system is a great way to maintain air circulation and make the crawlspace air equal to what the rest of the home is, rather than spending unnecessarily on dehumidifiers.  If encapsulation is done well with the right materials, there is no need for additional dehumidification.
